Notes | Before I left Singapore, I took a 5-week class to learn to sew a cheongsam dress at Fashion Makerspace, with the goal of making it for a friend’s wedding. I remember going to the local library after some of those classes, and browsing through a beautiful book about the history of the cheongsam and the qipao. Honestly, I feel a little strange about the idea of wearing a cheongsam, as it’s not my own culture. I only wore it to that wedding, and never again since. But I really enjoyed the process of making it and learning about the garment. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to have learned from someone who knew what they were talking about. |
